GIVE LANGUAGE BARRIERS THE THUMB. A bilingual site designed for the German artist Brigitte Maria Mayer, hosted by the Goethe-Institut Chicago, featured a thumbnail navigation scheme (circular detail, upper right). These thumbnails not only provided access the gallery images without requiring any translation, they also suggested connections between works by relating three larger thumbnail images to the current image. In some cases the larger thumbnail was not Ms. Mayer's work, but rather a reproduction of a classical work that inspired the linked photo (upper left inset).
